Troops Capture Haqqani Network Leader

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 30, 2011 — A Haqqani net­work leader was cap­tured by a com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force in the Pul‑e ‘Alam dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Log­ar province today, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

The leader con­duct­ed attacks against coali­tion forces and dis­trib­uted weapons through­out the area, offi­cials said. 

In oth­er Afghanistan oper­a­tions today: 

— In the Kan­da­har dis­trict of Kan­da­har province, a com­bined force detained mul­ti­ple sus­pects dur­ing a search for a Tal­iban leader who directs attacks against Afghan forces and dis­trib­utes explo­sives to insur­gents in the province. 

— A com­bined force detained sev­er­al sus­pects while search­ing for a Tal­iban mem­ber in Kandahar’s Shah Wali Kot dis­trict. The man is known to move heavy weapon­ry for insur­gents through­out the province. 

— A com­bined force detained sev­er­al sus­pects while search­ing for a Tal­iban mem­ber who coor­di­nates insur­gents in the Mar­jah dis­trict of Hel­mand province. 

— A com­bined force cap­tured a Tal­iban facil­i­ta­tor in the Chak‑e War­dak dis­trict of War­dak province. The secu­ri­ty force also seized weapons and detained three sus­pects dur­ing the operation. 

— A com­bined force detained two sus­pects while search­ing for a Tal­iban leader in the Ghazni dis­trict of Ghazni province. The leader directs attacks against Afghan forces. 

— In the Sabari dis­trict of Khost province, a com­bined force cap­tured a Haqqani leader and detained two sus­pects. The leader coor­di­nat­ed attacks against Afghan forces. 

In Afghanistan oper­a­tions yesterday: 

— A coali­tion force seized a weapons cache con­tain­ing a machine gun, an assault rifle, about 154 pounds of home­made explo­sives, det­o­na­tion cord and impro­vised explo­sive device-mak­ing com­po­nents in Helmand’s San­gin district. 

— In Kandahar’s Mai­wand dis­trict, a com­bined force dis­cov­ered a drug cache con­tain­ing about 165 pounds of hashish.
