Combined Patrol Kills Insurgents, Seizes Weapons

WASHINGTON, Sept. 7, 2011 — An Afghan and coali­tion patrol killed two insur­gents, detained numer­ous sus­pects and seized ene­my weapons yes­ter­day while search­ing for a Tal­iban leader in the Sayyid­abad Abad dis­trict of Afghanistan’s War­dak province, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

The leader is respon­si­ble for attack plan­ning and pro­vid­ing sup­plies to fel­low insur­gent leaders. 

The patrol encoun­tered two armed insur­gents dur­ing the search oper­a­tion. Respond­ing to the threat, the secu­ri­ty force engaged both indi­vid­u­als, killing them. One indi­vid­ual was armed with a pis­tol and the oth­er with an assault rifle. 

The patrol seized a machine gun, grenades and ammunition. 

In oth­er Afghanistan oper­a­tions yesterday: 

— A com­bined force detained mul­ti­ple sus­pects while search­ing for a Tal­iban leader in the Ali­abad dis­trict of Kun­duz province. The leader pro­vides weapons to insur­gents with­in the district. 

— In the Kan­da­har dis­trict of Kan­da­har province, a com­bined force detained a Tal­iban facil­i­ta­tor and sev­er­al asso­ciates. The facil­i­ta­tor assist­ed the Tal­iban in road­side-bomb attacks. 

— A com­bined force detained numer­ous sus­pects while search­ing for a senior Tal­iban leader in the Nahr‑e Saraj dis­trict of Hel­mand province. 

— In the Sabari dis­trict of Khost province, a com­bined force detained sev­er­al sus­pects while search­ing for a Haqqani net­work leader. The leader coor­di­nates the move­ment of mines, mor­tars, rock­et-pro­pelled grenades and road­side bomb-mak­ing mate­ri­als. The force seized sev­er­al RPGs, one frag­men­ta­tion grenade and some assault rifles dur­ing the operation. 

— Com­bined forces killed one insur­gent, detained three sus­pects and seized a weapons cache con­tain­ing 150 pounds of explo­sives and a land­mine dur­ing sep­a­rate oper­a­tions across Region­al Com­mand East. 

In Sept. 5 Afghanistan operations: 

— A com­bined force detained sev­er­al sus­pects while search­ing for a Tal­iban com­man­der in the Kan­da­har dis­trict of Kan­da­har province. The com­man­der is respon­si­ble for plan­ning attacks against inter­na­tion­al aid work­ers and pro­vid­ing fight­ers to oth­er Tal­iban lead­ers in the region. 

— A coali­tion patrol dis­cov­ered an ammu­ni­tion cache con­tain­ing 1,000 7.62mm rounds in the Mar­jeh dis­trict of Hel­mand province. The cache con­sist­ed of 1,000 7.62mm rounds. 

— In the Nerkh dis­trict of War­dak province, a com­bined force detained two sus­pects while search­ing for a Tal­iban leader. The leader is a Tal­iban-appoint­ed gov­ern­ment offi­cial for oper­a­tions in the district.
