WASHINGTON, Nov. 2, 2011 — An Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents and detained one suspect while searching for a Haqqani network leader in the Yahya Khel district of Afghanistan’s Paktika province yesterday, military officials reported.
The Haqqani leader oversees insurgent fighting cells and is responsible for attacks against Afghan forces.
Multiple weapons and bomb-making materials were seized by the security force during the operation.
In other Afghanistan operations yesterday:
— A combined patrol killed several insurgents and detained two individuals in the Baghran district of Helmand province. The force seized 8,800 pounds of poppy seeds, 66 pounds of opium and some small arms.
— In the Tarin Kot district of Uruzgan province, a combined patrol killed two insurgents and detained several other individuals. The patrol also seized some small arms.
— A combined patrol discovered a large improvised explosive device in the Zharay district of Kandahar province. The combined force requested assistance from an explosive ordnance disposal team, which safely destroyed the IED. One uninhabited building was damaged. No civilians were harmed during the operation.
— A combined force detained multiple suspects while searching for a Taliban facilitator in the Sangin district of Helmand province. The facilitator distributes weapons and explosives in the district and plans attacks against coalition forces.
— In the Shinwar district of Nangarhar province, a weapons cache was turned over to Afghan forces as part of a local disarmament program. The cache contained two rocket-propelled grenade launchers, eight RPGs, one mortar tube, 74 82mm mortar rounds, one recoilless rifle, three heavy machine guns, 90 12.7mm rounds and various weapon mounts.
— A combined force detained several suspects during a search for a Haqqani network leader in the Sabari district of Khost province. The insurgent leader distributes rockets, firearms, and bomb components and plans attacks throughout the district.
— In the Ghazni district of Ghazni province, a coalition airstrike killed several insurgents and destroyed their fighting position. Some rifles and RPGs were confiscated. No civilians were harmed during the operation.
— Afghan and coalition forces killed five insurgents and detained four suspects during operations in eastern Afghanistan. Coalition airstrikes killed four insurgents in the Ghazni district of Ghazni province. Another airstrike killed one insurgent in the Sharan district of Paktika province. Afghan soldiers detained four suspects in the Baraki Barak district of Logar province.
— Two Afghan civilians were wounded by an IED detonation in the Khowst district of Khowst province. Coalition forces provided medical care and transported one of the wounded to a nearby clinic for treatment. The other injured person was treated at the scene and released.
In Oct. 31 Afghanistan operations:
— A coalition patrol consisting of Afghan and Romanian troops discovered a cache containing mortar rounds and bomb-making materials in the Qalat district of Zabul province.
