Combined Force Detains Several Insurgents

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 18, 2011 — A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force detained mul­ti­ple sus­pect­ed insur­gents dur­ing an oper­a­tion in the Nawah-ye Barakzai dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Hel­mand province yes­ter­day, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

The force con­duct­ed the oper­a­tion after receiv­ing a tip that insur­gent lead­ers were meet­ing at a com­pound in the area. 

After call­ing for the men inside to come out peace­ful­ly, the insur­gents emerged and were detained with­out incident. 

In oth­er Afghanistan oper­a­tions yesterday: 

— In the Now Zad dis­trict of Hel­mand province, a com­bined force dis­cov­ered a weapons cache con­tain­ing three rock­et-pro­pelled grenades, mul­ti­ple impro­vised explo­sive device com­po­nents, two anti-per­son­nel mines, 20 flares and 1,400 rounds of assault rifle ammu­ni­tion. All of the weapons were destroyed. 

— A coali­tion patrol seized a weapons cache con­tain­ing 40 grenades and 500 rounds of 7.62 mm ammu­ni­tion in the San­gin dis­trict of Hel­mand province. 

— A com­bined force cap­tured a Tal­iban facil­i­ta­tor, detained anoth­er sus­pect, and seized sev­er­al assault rifles and ammu­ni­tion pouch­es in the Dand dis­trict of Kan­da­har province. 

— A com­bined force detained sev­er­al sus­pects while search­ing for a Tal­iban facil­i­ta­tor in the San­gin dis­trict of Hel­mand province. The secu­ri­ty force seized one rock­et-pro­pelled grenade launch­er, one machine gun, one assault rifle and mul­ti­ple grenades. 

— A com­bined force detained sev­er­al sus­pects dur­ing a search for a Tal­iban leader in the Zur­mat dis­trict of Pak­tia province. 

— Also in the Zur­mat dis­trict, a com­bined force cap­tured a Tal­iban leader and detained sev­er­al suspects. 

— A com­bined patrol killed an insur­gent leader dur­ing a fire fight in the Mar­jeh dis­trict of Hel­mand province. Insur­gents fired at the patrol. The patrol returned fire, result­ing in the death of the insur­gent leader. The leader was respon­si­ble for plan­ning attacks against Afghan officials.
