Combined Force Captures Haqqani Network Leader

WASHINGTON, Nov. 29, 2011 — A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force cap­tured a Haqqani net­work leader dur­ing an oper­a­tion in the Sabari dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Khost province today, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

The facil­i­ta­tor dis­trib­uted road­side bombs and planned attacks against Afghan forces, offi­cials said. One oth­er per­son was detained dur­ing the operation. 

In oth­er Afghanistan oper­a­tions today: 

— A com­bined force cap­tured a Tal­iban facil­i­ta­tor in the Ghazni dis­trict of Ghazni province. The facil­i­ta­tor direct­ed attacks against Afghan forces. The secu­ri­ty force detained one oth­er per­son dur­ing the operation. 

— In the Yahya Khel dis­trict of Pak­ti­ka province, a com­bined force con­fis­cat­ed bomb-mak­ing mate­ri­als and detained two sus­pects dur­ing a search for a Haqqani net­work leader. The leader is respon­si­ble for attacks against Afghan forces. 

— A com­bined force cap­tured two insur­gents, one an al-Qai­da facil­i­ta­tor, and killed two oth­er insur­gents in the Surkh Rod dis­trict of Nan­garhar province. The facil­i­ta­tor served as a couri­er and deliv­ered sup­plied to insur­gents in Afghanistan and Pakistan. 

— A com­bined force killed one insur­gent and detained one oth­er per­son dur­ing a search for a Tal­iban leader in the Maid­an Shahr dis­trict of War­dak province. The leader plans attacks against Afghan forces in the district. 

— A com­bined force cap­tured a Tal­iban facil­i­ta­tor and detained two sus­pects in the Mai­wand dis­trict of Kan­da­har province. The facil­i­ta­tor dis­trib­uted road­side bombs, weapons and ammu­ni­tion, and he pro­vid­ed finan­cial sup­port to insur­gent fighters. 

— In the Yahya Khel dis­trict of Pak­ti­ka province, a com­bined force seized 110 pounds of hashish and 60 pounds of pop­py seeds. 

— In the Tanai dis­trict of Khost province, a local Afghan turned in nine grenades, six rock­et-pro­pelled grenades, 11 RPG motors, some small-arms and machine-gun ammu­ni­tion, three con­tain­ers of explo­sives and more than 100 bomb-mak­ing components. 

In oth­er news, Afghan and Roman­ian com­bined patrols dis­cov­ered sev­er­al home­made bombs in Zab­ul province Nov. 27.
