Combined Force Captures Haqqani Network Leader

WASHINGTON, Oct. 26, 2011 — A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force cap­tured a Haqqani net­work leader in the Sabari dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Khost province yes­ter­day, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

The Haqqani leader dis­trib­uted bombs and coor­di­nat­ed attacks against Afghan forces. Sev­er­al sus­pects were detained dur­ing the operation. 

In oth­er Afghanistan oper­a­tions yesterday: 

— In the Ali­abad dis­trict of Kun­duz province, a com­bined force detained two sus­pects while search­ing for a Tal­iban leader who coor­di­nates attacks with oth­er insur­gents in Afghanistan and Pakistan. 

— A com­bined force detained mul­ti­ple sus­pects dur­ing a search for a Tal­iban leader in the Mar­ja dis­trict of Hel­mand province. The leader dis­trib­utes and directs the place­ment of impro­vised explo­sive devices. An Afghan girl was wound­ed dur­ing the oper­a­tion. She was pro­vid­ed treat­ment and was trans­port­ed to a coali­tion med­ical facil­i­ty for fur­ther care. 

— In the Sper­ah dis­trict of Khost province, a com­bined force detained a sus­pect dur­ing a search for a Haqqani net­work leader who places IEDs and plans small-arms attacks in the Sper­ah dis­trict center. 

— A com­bined force cap­tured a Tal­iban leader and detained two sus­pects in the Sayyid­abad dis­trict of War­dak province. The leader is linked to the move­ment of fight­ers and abduc­tions of Afghan gov­ern­ment officials. 

— Com­bined forces killed eight insur­gents and detained four sus­pects dur­ing oper­a­tions across east­ern Afghanistan. An insur­gent was killed after engag­ing Afghan sol­diers with small-arms fire in the Bara­ki Barak dis­trict of Log­ar province. Sev­en insur­gents were killed in the Giyan dis­trict of Pak­ti­ka province after engag­ing coali­tion forces. Afghan sol­diers detained three sus­pects in the Sabari dis­trict of Khost province. The detainees had two assault rifles and four loaded mag­a­zines. In the Zardan dis­trict of Pak­tia province, anoth­er per­son was detained for alleged­ly emplac­ing an IED

— In the San­gin dis­trict of Hel­mand province, a com­bined patrol seized five 83 mm mor­tars, two rock­et-pro­pelled grenade can­is­ters, three RPGs, 10 pounds of explo­sives and oth­er IED-mak­ing materials. 

In Oct. 25 operations: 

— In the Shahid‑E Hasas dis­trict of Uruz­gan province, a com­bined patrol killed sev­er­al insur­gents and detained numer­ous suspects. 

— A com­bined patrol detained an insur­gent leader in the Tarin Kot dis­trict of Uruz­gan province. The insur­gent leader is respon­si­ble for IED attacks against Afghan and coali­tion forces. 

In an Oct. 24 oper­a­tion in the Kan­da­har dis­trict of Kan­da­har province, a com­bined patrol inter­dict­ed a ship­ment of drug-pro­cess­ing mate­ri­als includ­ing mor­phine, ammo­ni­um chlo­ride and sodi­um car­bon­ate totalling more than 46,640 pounds. Afghan police con­fis­cat­ed the ship­ment, and a per­son of inter­est was detained.
