WASHINGTON, Oct. 26, 2011 — A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani network leader in the Sabari district of Afghanistan’s Khost province yesterday, military officials reported.
The Haqqani leader distributed bombs and coordinated attacks against Afghan forces. Several suspects were detained during the operation.
In other Afghanistan operations yesterday:
— In the Aliabad district of Kunduz province, a combined force detained two suspects while searching for a Taliban leader who coordinates attacks with other insurgents in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
— A combined force detained multiple suspects during a search for a Taliban leader in the Marja district of Helmand province. The leader distributes and directs the placement of improvised explosive devices. An Afghan girl was wounded during the operation. She was provided treatment and was transported to a coalition medical facility for further care.
— In the Sperah district of Khost province, a combined force detained a suspect during a search for a Haqqani network leader who places IEDs and plans small-arms attacks in the Sperah district center.
— A combined force captured a Taliban leader and detained two suspects in the Sayyidabad district of Wardak province. The leader is linked to the movement of fighters and abductions of Afghan government officials.
— Combined forces killed eight insurgents and detained four suspects during operations across eastern Afghanistan. An insurgent was killed after engaging Afghan soldiers with small-arms fire in the Baraki Barak district of Logar province. Seven insurgents were killed in the Giyan district of Paktika province after engaging coalition forces. Afghan soldiers detained three suspects in the Sabari district of Khost province. The detainees had two assault rifles and four loaded magazines. In the Zardan district of Paktia province, another person was detained for allegedly emplacing an IED.
— In the Sangin district of Helmand province, a combined patrol seized five 83 mm mortars, two rocket-propelled grenade canisters, three RPGs, 10 pounds of explosives and other IED-making materials.
In Oct. 25 operations:
— In the Shahid‑E Hasas district of Uruzgan province, a combined patrol killed several insurgents and detained numerous suspects.
— A combined patrol detained an insurgent leader in the Tarin Kot district of Uruzgan province. The insurgent leader is responsible for IED attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
In an Oct. 24 operation in the Kandahar district of Kandahar province, a combined patrol interdicted a shipment of drug-processing materials including morphine, ammonium chloride and sodium carbonate totalling more than 46,640 pounds. Afghan police confiscated the shipment, and a person of interest was detained.
