Coalition, Afghans Work Together to Capture Insurgents

KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 27, 2012 — Coali­tion and Afghan forces have worked togeth­er through­out Afghanistan in recent days, cap­tur­ing sev­er­al insur­gent lead­ers who led attacks against them and killing one in self defense, mil­i­tary offi­cials said.

In east­ern Afghanistan today, a coali­tion secu­ri­ty force in the Pul‑e Alam dis­trict of Log­ar province cap­tured a Tal­iban oper­a­tor who pro­vid­ed weapons and finan­cial sup­port to numer­ous insur­gent fight­ers in the area. No shots were fired dur­ing the operation. 

Also today, coali­tion and Afghan forces in the Nadir Shah Kot dis­trict of Khost province cap­tured a Haqqani net­work leader who man­aged an insur­gent net­work and direct­ed oper­a­tions against Afghan civil­ians and secu­ri­ty forces in the dis­trict. Two sus­pect­ed insur­gents also were detained. 

On Feb. 25, an Afghan provin­cial response team, work­ing with coali­tion forces in the west­ern province of Farah, cap­tured sev­er­al insur­gents while act­ing on a search war­rant in the Bala Boluk dis­trict. All of the detainees were direct­ly tied to attacks against Afghan and coali­tion forces, as well as crimes against local Afghans, mil­i­tary offi­cials said. 

The com­bined force also found and destroyed anti-per­son­nel mines, grenades, ammu­ni­tion, home­made explo­sives and var­i­ous bomb components. 

Also on Feb. 25, a com­bined force of Afghan and coali­tion ser­vice mem­bers fired on an insur­gent in the Mai­wand dis­trict of Kan­da­har province, killing the man after he ran at the secu­ri­ty force car­ry­ing grenades and small-arms ammu­ni­tion dur­ing a vehi­cle inspec­tion. The secu­ri­ty force found and destroyed bomb components.
