WASHINGTON, May 11, 2011 — Combined forces yesterday captured several suspected insurgents during an operation conducted in the Kandahar City district of Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, military officials reported.
Troops were searching for a Haqqani network terrorist leader linked to insurgent operations in Paktiya province as well as recruiting potential suicide bombers.
Also in Kandahar province yesterday, security forces detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader tied to bomb-making activities and other insurgent operations throughout the province’s Panjwai district.
In Paktiya province’s Ahmadabad district, troops found 255 machine-gun rounds, 15 rocket-propelled grenades, three land mines, three hand grenades and three rocket-propelled grenade boosters, which were destroyed in place.
