Irak — Iraqi Forces Arrest 8 Terrorism Suspects

WASHINGTON, May 5, 2010 — Iraqi secu­ri­ty forces arrest­ed eight ter­ror­ism sus­pects in oper­a­tions today and yes­ter­day, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

In a com­bined oper­a­tion with U.S. advi­sors north­east of Bagh­dad today, Iraqi forces arrest­ed five sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq crim­i­nal associates. 

The Iraqi forces and U.S. advi­sors searched sev­er­al build­ings for a sus­pect in road­side-bomb attacks and arrest­ed the five asso­ciates based on infor­ma­tion and evi­dence gath­ered at the scene. 

In Mosul yes­ter­day, Iraqi forces work­ing with U.S. advi­sors arrest­ed a sus­pect­ed high-lev­el al-Qai­da in Iraq leader who alleged­ly is involved in bribery and extor­tion of judi­cial offi­cials in north­ern Iraq, along with two sus­pect­ed associates. 

The sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq leader alleged­ly has con­tact with oth­er high-lev­el ter­ror­ist mem­bers, and is the leader of Islam­ic State of Iraq ter­ror­ist group’s efforts to bribe judi­cial offi­cials and facil­i­tate the release of accused ter­ror­ists from deten­tion facil­i­ties, offi­cials said.
