Afghanistan — Forces in Afghanistan Find 6 Roadside Bombs

KABUL, April 27, 2010 — The dis­cov­ery of six road­side bombs, includ­ing one that insur­gents were in the process of plant­i­ng, high­light­ed oper­a­tions in Afghanistan yes­ter­day and today, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

In Kan­da­har province’s Arghandab dis­trict this morn­ing, an Inter­na­tion­al Secu­ri­ty Assis­tance Force patrol found a road­side bomb near a school. It det­o­nat­ed when an explo­sive ord­nance dis­pos­al team was attempt­ing to dis­arm it, but no one was hurt. 

An Afghan patrol found a road­side bomb made from two anti-tank mines in Hel­mand province’s Beshud dis­trict yes­ter­day. An EOD team destroyed it. 

In Zab­ul province’s Qalat dis­trict yes­ter­day, a com­bined Afghan-inter­na­tion­al patrol found three remote-con­trolled road­side bombs. Afghan police detained five peo­ple for ques­tion­ing, and an EOD team destroyed the devices. 

A com­bined Afghan-inter­na­tion­al secu­ri­ty force saw two insur­gents plant­i­ng a road­side bomb in Khost province’s Sabari dis­trict yes­ter­day. The patrol cap­tured one of the men and destroyed the bomb. 

In oth­er news from Afghanistan, a com­bined patrol in Helmand’s Musa Qalah dis­trict received infor­ma­tion from local Afghans about pos­si­ble insur­gent activ­i­ty in a com­pound in the area. ISAF forces cor­doned off the com­pound while Afghan police went inside to inves­ti­gate. As police offi­cers entered the com­pound, an Afghan civil­ian told them that an Afghan man was in the next room dressed in a bur­ka. He was found to have 25 rounds of small-arms ammu­ni­tion and was detained. 

Else­where, a com­bined patrol in Helmand’s Now Zad dis­trict found five 60 mm recoil­less rifle war­heads inside a cave yes­ter­day, and anoth­er com­bined patrol in the province’s Nad‑e Ali dis­trict found a cache con­tain­ing two rock­et-pro­pelled grenades. 

No Afghan civil­ians were harmed dur­ing these oper­a­tions, offi­cials said.
