WASHINGTON, Sept. 7, 2011 — An Afghan and coalition patrol killed two insurgents, detained numerous suspects and seized enemy weapons yesterday while searching for a Taliban leader in the Sayyidabad Abad district of Afghanistan’s Wardak province, military officials reported.
The leader is responsible for attack planning and providing supplies to fellow insurgent leaders.
The patrol encountered two armed insurgents during the search operation. Responding to the threat, the security force engaged both individuals, killing them. One individual was armed with a pistol and the other with an assault rifle.
The patrol seized a machine gun, grenades and ammunition.
In other Afghanistan operations yesterday:
— A combined force detained multiple suspects while searching for a Taliban leader in the Aliabad district of Kunduz province. The leader provides weapons to insurgents within the district.
— In the Kandahar district of Kandahar province, a combined force detained a Taliban facilitator and several associates. The facilitator assisted the Taliban in roadside-bomb attacks.
— A combined force detained numerous suspects while searching for a senior Taliban leader in the Nahr‑e Saraj district of Helmand province.
— In the Sabari district of Khost province, a combined force detained several suspects while searching for a Haqqani network leader. The leader coordinates the movement of mines, mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bomb-making materials. The force seized several RPGs, one fragmentation grenade and some assault rifles during the operation.
— Combined forces killed one insurgent, detained three suspects and seized a weapons cache containing 150 pounds of explosives and a landmine during separate operations across Regional Command East.
In Sept. 5 Afghanistan operations:
— A combined force detained several suspects while searching for a Taliban commander in the Kandahar district of Kandahar province. The commander is responsible for planning attacks against international aid workers and providing fighters to other Taliban leaders in the region.
— A coalition patrol discovered an ammunition cache containing 1,000 7.62mm rounds in the Marjeh district of Helmand province. The cache consisted of 1,000 7.62mm rounds.
— In the Nerkh district of Wardak province, a combined force detained two suspects while searching for a Taliban leader. The leader is a Taliban-appointed government official for operations in the district.
