KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 2, 2011 — A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents while searching for Haqqani terrorist network leader in the Mata Khan district of Afghanistan’s Paktika province yesterday, military officials reported.
The target of the search is responsible for kidnappings and for attacks against Afghan forces, officials said.
While searching the area, the security force confiscated a machine gun, grenades, assault rifles, bomb-making materials and chest racks.
In other operations yesterday around Afghanistan:
— A combined force in Baghlan province’s Pul‑e Khumri district detained a Taliban leader who directed suicide-bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
— In Helmand province’s Kajaki district, a combined force detained a suspected insurgent while searching for a man who directs Taliban operations in the area.
— A combined force detained several suspected insurgents in Helmand’s Washer district while searching for a man who leads a Taliban roadside-bomb cell in Kandahar province.
— Also in Helmand province, a combined patrol detained two suspected insurgents in Nahr‑e Saraj while searching for a Taliban leader who builds roadside bombs and provides logistical support to other Taliban chiefs in the area.
— A combined force detained a Haqqani network facilitator responsible for coordinating roadside-bomb attacks, along with several other suspected insurgents, in Khost province’s Terayzai district.
— In Paktia province’s Zurmat district, a combined force detained a suspected insurgent while searching for a Haqqani network leader who directs attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
— A combined force in Nangarhar province’s Hisarak district killed an insurgent after the man attacked them during a search for the Taliban-appointed governing official for operations in the district. He is responsible for the movement of foreign fighters and weapons used in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
— In Wardak province’s Nerkh district, a combined force detained multiple suspected insurgents while searching for a man who provides direct support to senior Hezb‑E Islami Gulbuddin terrorist organization leaders.
