Afghan, Coalition Forces Detain Insurgents, Seize Drugs

WASHINGTON, Nov. 23, 2010 — Afghan and coali­tion forces detained sev­er­al sus­pect­ed insur­gents this morn­ing and last night dur­ing oper­a­tions through­out Afghanistan, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

Sev­er­al sus­pect­ed Tal­iban were detained dur­ing oper­a­tions in east­ern Afghanistan’s Pak­it­ka, Pak­tiya and Log­ar provinces. The detainees are alleged­ly con­nect­ed to var­i­ous Tal­iban groups respon­si­ble for kid­nap­pings, plant­i­ng road­side bombs and coor­di­nat­ing attacks in the region, offi­cials said. 

Sev­er­al oth­er sus­pect­ed insur­gents were cap­tured overnight in south­ern Afghanistan’s Kan­da­har and Zab­ul provinces. The Kan­da­har oper­a­tion net­ted indi­vid­u­als sus­pect­ed of killing three Afghans and wound­ing four more in a Nov. 21 road­side bomb attack. The indi­vid­u­als are believed to also have ties with senior ter­ror­ist lead­ers oper­at­ing out of Pak­istan, offi­cials report­ed. The Zab­ul oper­a­tion result­ed in Afghan and coali­tion forces detain­ing sev­er­al indi­vid­u­als with alleged con­nec­tions to bomb­ing cells in the province, offi­cials added. 

In Khost province yes­ter­day, Afghan and coali­tion forces cap­tured an indi­vid­ual report­ed­ly con­nect­ed to a Haqqani net­work bomb sup­pli­er. The sus­pect­ed insur­gent was a top tar­get for the com­bined force and was cap­tured in the Sabari dis­trict. Sev­er­al oth­er sus­pect­ed insur­gents were also detained. 

Afghan and coali­tion forces yes­ter­day seized more than 40 pounds of opi­um in Kan­da­har province’s Mai­wan dis­trict. Tips from local res­i­dents sparked the com­bined force to plan and exe­cute the oper­a­tion, offi­cials said.
