The Royal Australian Navy announced today that HMAS Darwin will be playing their annual charity rugby match against ACT “Vikings” Veterans Rugby Club at 1400 on Sunday 11 July 2010, at Royal Military College, Duntroon.
HMAS Canberra decommissioned on 12 November 2005 entitling HMAS Darwin to adopt HMAS Canberra’s charity, the Brumbies Rugby Football Club (RFC) and its association with Canberra Hospital. Their first game was played against ACT Veterans on 4 June 2006.
The match will be attended by Vice Admiral Russ Crane, AO, CSM, Chief of the Royal Australian Navy and all funds will be presented to the Canberra Children’s Hospital on Monday 12 July 2010 by members of HMAS Darwin.
“The annual Rugby match contested over the last 4 years between Darwin and the ACT Veterans is one of the Ships’ key sporting events. It is contested vigorously on the field and with great camaraderie off the field. The standard of rugby might not be up there with that of the former Wallaby greats but the enthusiasm, teamwork and commitment reflects the great spirit and energy of all those involved in the essential work of the Foundation. The match presents a wonderful opportunity to provide support to the Ships’ charity association with the Canberra Hospital and the Brumbies RFC”, said Lieutenant Commander Darron Rowe.
