Australia — HMAS Darwin to play charity rugby match against ACT “Vikings” Veterans Rugby Club

The Roy­al Aus­tralian Navy announced today that HMAS Dar­win will be play­ing their annu­al char­i­ty rug­by match against ACT “Vikings” Vet­er­ans Rug­by Club at 1400 on Sun­day 11 July 2010, at Roy­al Mil­i­tary Col­lege, Dun­troon.

HMAS Can­ber­ra decom­mis­sioned on 12 Novem­ber 2005 enti­tling HMAS Dar­win to adopt HMAS Canberra’s char­i­ty, the Brumbies Rug­by Foot­ball Club (RFC) and its asso­ci­a­tion with Can­ber­ra Hos­pi­tal. Their first game was played against ACT Vet­er­ans on 4 June 2006. 

The match will be attend­ed by Vice Admi­ral Russ Crane, AO, CSM, Chief of the Roy­al Aus­tralian Navy and all funds will be pre­sent­ed to the Can­ber­ra Children’s Hos­pi­tal on Mon­day 12 July 2010 by mem­bers of HMAS Darwin.

“The annu­al Rug­by match con­test­ed over the last 4 years between Dar­win and the ACT Vet­er­ans is one of the Ships’ key sport­ing events. It is con­test­ed vig­or­ous­ly on the field and with great cama­raderie off the field. The stan­dard of rug­by might not be up there with that of the for­mer Wal­la­by greats but the enthu­si­asm, team­work and com­mit­ment reflects the great spir­it and ener­gy of all those involved in the essen­tial work of the Foun­da­tion. The match presents a won­der­ful oppor­tu­ni­ty to pro­vide sup­port to the Ships’ char­i­ty asso­ci­a­tion with the Can­ber­ra Hos­pi­tal and the Brumbies RFC”, said Lieu­tenant Com­man­der Dar­ron Rowe.
